Trek to Roop Kund (6 Days)
Roop Kund has become famous due to a historic event, where a number of bones and remnants of people were discovered.. Different people have different theories. Some say that these are remains of pilgrims who were on a pilgrimage and were stuck by a storm. Some others say that the people were a part of the group of General Zoravar Singh of Jammu and were returning from a raid in Tibet. Besides these mysterious tales, Roop Kund has a very scenic landscape. Located at a high altitude of 5000 meters in a mountainous feature called the Trishul, in Gharwal region of Uttarakhand. This trek trail passes through lovely lush green grassy meadows, and dense jungles with countless streams of water adorning the area. You will see some snow laden here too. Not very tough, the trek does require some amount of effort due to a lot of walking and the high altitudes. Thus it would be beneficial if you do have some previous experience walking on the mountains.
The day starts as we drive to Mundoli village and pass through the famous Rudraprayag, Devprayag and some few towns and villages. We will be driving for 8-9 hours, and we will also halt for breakfast, lunch and some rest. As we reach Mundoli, we spend the night there.
DAY2: Mundoli -Bedni Bugyal via Wan
From Mundoli, we progress on our trip, another 10 km, to Wan, from where the real hiking begins. We take our camping gear and follow the trail to Bedni Bugyal (altitude 3350 m). This trek consists of walking for 11 km and it takes about 3 hours or so. Bedni, is exceptionally scenic. With wondrous landscapes of grassy lands seen for miles and miles, and colorful flowers, you will see forests, too. A great camping site, this also serves as a place for locals to graze their sheep. One more day is spent here for getting acclimatized, and it also gives us the opportunity to drink in the sights, smells and sound of this beautiful place.
DAY 3: Bedni Bugyal -Bagubassa
We then go to BaguBassa. Also known as the land of flowers in the local Gharwaali dialect, this place is bursting with numerous flowers all around. The rare Brahma Kamal (variety of lotus) is found here. This flower grows only at an altitude, this high. Today we walk for 10 kms, before we reach our next destination. You may encounter difficulty in climbing here as the altitude keeps on rising higher till Roopkund. That is the reason we like to reach Bagu Bassa earlier as it gives us the chance to get acclimatized well. We usually camp here for two days, but that depends on weather conditions.
DAY 4: Bagubassa – Roopkund
We start today’s journey by trekking to Kaluka Vinayak Pass, via Pathar Nachwani. As the sun rises, the snow starts getting softer and softer and the walk becomes increasingly difficult. For this reason, we try to cover as much distance as possible before sunrise, and so try to start very early. Apart from the difficulty with the altitude, the place boasts of some extraordinary landscapes, with the views of Himalayan peaks such as Badrinath, Trishul , Nanda devi and some more. We pass through pastures at this altitude. They remain mostly covered with snow, except for some part of the year. Then we reach Roop kund and see some remains of humans and horses.
A thing you cannot miss to do is to climb the Junargali peak on a 100 m ridge. Possible to do on most days but we may have to skip it, if the weather is bad. The view of the lake nestled in the mountains is stupendous. Soon after, we walk down, to the campsite at Bagu bassa or Bedni Bugyal, where we rest and have dinner.
DAY 5: Bedni Bugyal/Bagubassa – Wan
Today we start the return journey to Wan via Bedni Bugyal, if the night was at Bagu Bassa. This trek is very easy compared to the thicker air and lower altitude and so will better be able to appreciate the beauty of the Rhodederon forests. We climb a ridge to go to Wan village and then to our campsite to spend the night.
DAY 6: Wan – Rishikesh
An early morning breakfast and we return to Rishikesh, leaving all the wonderful view behind us.
