The duration for this trip is 7 days but adjustments can be accommodated as per requirement.
Day 1: Shimla – Sarahan – Reckong Peo
We begin this trip from Shimla and drive to Kinnaur post breakfast. If required, pick-up from Chandigarh is also possible, but that has to be quite early in the morning. We typically reach Reckong Peo by evening and retire. You might want to explore the local areas.
Day 2: Reckong Peo – Nako – Tabo
Here, for foreign nationals a permit has to be acquired from Reckong Peo, but it only takes a few minutes. We then halto at Nako village where we have lunch, do a bit of sightseeing along the lake, after we trek to the lake . Before retiring, we drive to Tabo and sink in the sights.
Day 3: Tabo – Dhankar
The morning will be spent visiting the caves where Buddhist monks used to and still do, meditate. We will also visit the Tabo monastery. The Tabo monastery is famous for its legends and ancient history. We will then have lunch and head to Dhankar, the ancient capital of Spiti, where we view the ruins of an old fort and the Dhankar monastery. Time permitting, we may also visit Lalung to view its well-known “Three cornered Buddha Statue”
Day 4: Dhankar – Ki – Kibber
Dhankar lake is an ideal place if you love bird watching and wildlife photography, as it attracts many exotic birds and animals. Then comes a drive to Kibber via Ki village to see the mountain top situated monastery. We then drive to the largest village in the region- Kibber village. Again you might want to click some pictures of the migratory birds and some rare wild animals typical to the place of Spiti.
Day 5: Kibber – Kaza
Post breakfast, we head to the biggest town of this district- Kaza and feast on the sights of urbanization of this lovely town. Kaza boasts of magnificent views of the Spiti river along its mountain side, which further leads to fascinating Shilla valley. The locals graze their herds here and you might even enjoy helping them out.
Day 6: Kaza – Kalpa
From Kaza we go to Kalpa Village, where you will see scenic apple orchards. Now is the time to blend in with the villagers, see them perform their daily tasks and volunteer to help them to have a feel of the simple village life. Surrounded by vegetable fields, green grazing meadows and ofcourse, the orchards, we spend the time having some picnic lunch and taking pictures. The treat of the day awaits you, as we partake a typical Spitian dinner.
Day 7: Kalpa – Sarahan – Shimla
We end the road trip by driving back to Shimla via Sarhan, where we savour the local momos (dumplings) and bask in the glory of our picturesque surroundings. In the evening , we return to Shimla.
